Beginner Beanie – A Cozy Beginner Hat

This free knitting pattern is ideal for Level 2 - Confident Beginner KnittersText area which says "Free Knitting Pattern: Beginner Beanie - A cozy beginner hat, learnknittingonline.com" followed by a woman wearing a brown knitted beanie

Designed by Margery Winter, this cozy hat is knitted in the flat and is simply perfect for confident beginners to work on.

The hat comes in a single size and measures approximately 19 inches in circumference. In metric measurements, the circumference is about 38 cm. However, the hat is stretchable enough and can easily fit a range of sizes.

Using Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Thick & Quick Yarn, knit the hat using US11 knitting needles. That is 8 mm needles, if you are using the metric system.

Furthermore, since the hat is knitted in the flat, use the mattress stitch to sew the hat together. The mattress stitch is an invisible and versatile stitch used in grafting knitted pieces together.

If you want to learn more about mattress stitch, we have a fully illustrated, step-by-step tutorial on this stitch here: Learn How to Do a Mattress Stitch.

Moreover, employ the k2tog and p2tog knitting decreases in this pattern. Use both to reduce the number of working stitches on a knitting project.

Learn more about the k2tog knitting decrease with our fully-illustrated, step-by-step tutorial found here: Basic Right-Slanting Decrease (K2tog).

In addition, find a detailed, step-by-step tutorial for p2tog which is also fully-illustrated here: Purled Right-Slanting Decrease (P2TOG).
