Neptune Baby Throw – A Charming Throw Blanket

Text area which says "Free Knitting Pattern: Neptune Baby Throw – A Charming Throw Blanket," followed by a blue knitted baby throw draped over a chair with a wooden elephant toy
This free knitting pattern is ideal for Level 1 - Beginner Knitters

Designed by the creatives over at Lion Brand Yarns, this easy blanket is worked with 2 strands of different colors held together.

The pattern is available in a single size and once completed measures approximately 30 inches square. That is about 76 cm square if you prefer using metric units.

To make this throw, you will need Lion Brand’s BabySoft Yarn. This yarn is an amazingly soft and easy-care DK-weight yarn made of 60% acrylic and 40% nylon. Perfect for babies and children knitting projects. Best of all, it is machine washable!

You will also need a size US 9 circular knitting needle to accommodate a large number of stitches. That’s a 5.5 mm needle if you are using the metric system.

Moreover, you will need to use the YO increase and k2tog decrease techniques when working on this project.

The YO or Yarnover increase is a standalone neutral increase. You create it by wrapping the yarn over the right needle between two stitches.

We have an illustrated tutorial on this technique if you want to learn it. You can find this tutorial here:  Learn the Open Yarnover Increase (YO).

The k2tog or knitting two stitches together is a basic right slanting decrease. It is used to compensate for a yarnover so you don’t increase your number of working stitches.

You can learn how to do the k2tog here: Basic Right-Slanting Decrease (K2tog).
