This free knitting pattern is ideal for Level 1 - Beginner Knitters

Designed by the talented team over at Lion Brand Yarns, this Gilmore Toque Knit Hat is knitted in rounds using double-pointed needles. It features a pom-pom on the top of the hat. In fact, this project is perfect for our beginner knitters to work on.

The hat is available in a single size; however, it is quite stretchy and will be able to fit a range of sizes. A completed hat will have a circumference of about 18 inches and a height of 10.5 inches. That’s approximately 45.5 cm in circumference and 26.5 cm in height if you are using the metric system.

To work on this hat, you will need Lion Brands Hometown Yarn. It is super bulky and soft which also comes in vibrant colors. This yarn is spun from 100% acrylic which makes it perfect for afghans, and accessories. Best of all, it is machine washable.

You will also need one US size of 15 circular knitting needles with a length of 16 inches, and one US size 15 double-pointed knitting needle. That’s approximately 10 mm with a 40.5 cm long circular knitting needle if you prefer to use the metric system.

Moreover, you will be using the k2tog knitting decrease when you start doing this project. The k2tog or knitting two stitches together is a basic right slanting decrease that is often paired with yarnover on lace patterns.

If you want to learn how to do the k2tog, we have an illustrated tutorial for it that you’ll find helpful. Find this tutorial here: Basic Right-Slanting Decrease (K2tog).
